Spread over 30 hours, this year the annual sale (initiated in 2015) was the company’s biggest in history, surpassing both Black Friday and Cyber Monday, reports Quartz:

Amazon said sales were up more than 60% from the same period last year, as tens of millions of Prime members made a purchase.

As of June, Amazon had 85 million Prime subscribers in the US alone.

The top products by country ranged from a Nintendo Switch in Mexico to an espresso machine in Italy – go figure.

In the US and Canada, Instant Pot cookers with a “cult following” were especially hot.

But while the overall most popular purchase was Amazon’s very own Echo Dot, taking the top slot as the best-selling product from any manufacturer in any category across Amazon globally, we’re going to focus on the 23andMe DNA test.

But what is it? Coming in as the second most popular item bought in the USA, it was on sale for $49,99 (R650) which was 50% off its original price.

Business Insider explains the basics of the product:

[In 2015], personal-genetics company 23andMe launched a new direct-to-consumer test that complies with the FDA’s rules on personal-genetics testing.

The test gives information on everything from how much DNA you share with our Neanderthal ancestors to how much caffeine you likely consume.

It also lets you know if you’re carrying certain genetic variations related to diseases that you could pass on to your kids.
