So you haven’t really lived the life of an adult until you’ve had to help a friend pack up and move houses.

They always promise to take you out for dinner, or buy you that nice bottle of wine, but that’s not always the case.

Sometimes, though, the reward comes in other shapes and forms. Take for example Benoni resident Linda Robinson, who was cleaning out an old windmill house on a friend’s plot when she hit the jackpot.

Now finding two extremely rare and significant legal texts isn’t going to make everyone hot under the collar, but how about the fact that they’re now listed on Gumtree for R45 000?

They’re Johannis Voet ‘Commentarius AD Pandectas’ Roman-Dutch law books, and Robinson says they have already attracted the interest of a High Court judge.

Johannes Voet, the grandson of famous theologian Gisbertus Voetius, was a Dutch law professor and church deacon who died in 1713. His works on legal theory were an important original source of South African law, and are still quoted in local courts.

Claire Cobbledick, Head of Core at Gumtree South Africa, says these books are a treasure trove of great historic interest, and demonstrate the way that online trading sites can enable anyone to easily make money from surprising finds.
