I am not too sure when the last time you gave Dolce & Gabbana a minute’s thought was, but they are once again the topic of conversation after a social media influencer they enlisted for their #DGMillennial campaign took a political-related boycott to the runway.
Raury, a 21-year-old hippie soul singer from the USA, walked down the luxury brand’s runway in Italy for their Spring/Summer ’18 men’s show on Saturday.
Before the final bow, Raury removed his shirt to reveal the phrases “PROTEST DG,” “GIVE ME FREEDOM,” and “I AM NOT YOUR SCAPEGOAT” penned across his chest.
But why?
Well, Melania Trump, that’s why.
D&G has been the focus of massive international boycott – called “Boycott D&G” – after Stefano Gabone (one-half of the D&G designers) posted a photo on Instagram of Mrs Trump wearing one of D&G’s designs to the Trump’s New Year’s Party at their Mar-a-Lago resort, reports TIME:
Gabbana received backlash for his Instagram post, with many commentators criticizing the designer for praising Trump. According to the Telegraph, Gabbana began striking back at commentators, writing to one: “please you dont buy anymore my fashion please!!! I dont need a ignorant costumer!!!” Gabbana also wrote that he just saw it has one dress and not a political statement, according to the Telegraph.
The campaign has since launched slogan T-shirts, and an advertisement where various models “protested” the brand – but Raury, who only came across the boycott the day before he was set to walk, thought their actions weak.
Speaking to GQ, Raury explained that:
The ‘Boycott Dolce & Gabbana’ T-shirt they created completely makes a mockery of what ‘boycotting’ is. I saw a commercial featuring the boycott T-shirt, and it looked playful and lighthearted—it was a joke. It was a troll.
Me, as a young man from Stone Mountain, Georgia, the birthplace of the Klu Klux Klan, I really felt this mockery of boycotting. Who knows, if boycotts didn’t happen, if Rosa Parks and M.L.K. didn’t step up…who knows if I would even exist. Boycotting matters. Boycotting is real. Dolce’s entire campaign says it’s not real. I know that if I walk out there and support or endorse anything that sits next to Trump—or support someone who even makes dinner for Trump or whatever—then that means that I support Trump also. I don’t support Trump.
Here’s what he put up on Insta:
I guess that’s just the price you pay for teaming up with a self-proclaimed indigo child.
Before you go, I just want to let you know something about Raury.
Raury became known back in 2014 for his “Ant-Tour Show”. He would set up camp outside shows of people like Childish Gambino, and start playing just as the main gig ended in an attempt to “steal” the artist’s fans, explains Complex.
And he was loved for it.
Here’s what he does. It might be to your taste, but check it out:
You see, indigo child.
