We’re about a month away from launching ‘Cabine du Cap’ – a luxury, fully-serviced cabin, set on 175 hectares of private land in the Klein Karoo, just outside Montagu. Quite a lot has happened since we last showed you.
So those of you who read the last article will recall that all we had was a cabin shell, and water coming from Poortjieskloof dam. The dream was to create a place that we could escape to, and also something that we could turn into a five-star retreat.
We figured the remoteness of the place (not a soul in sight), combined with the wildlife (antelope, baboons, rich birdlife) and distance from Cape Town (02h30) would appeal to people wanting to get away. With no cellphone signal and a baby in tow, the first thing we did was install internet. With this we would be able to make Skype calls to phones in an emergency.
Frikkie from Overberg Rekenaars sorted that out for us, by installing an antenna and radio on our one mountain peak, which delivered line of sight internet back down to the cabin. He over-delivered as always, and now we’ve got a 4Mb uncapped line which lets us stream everything from the Out of Africa soundtrack to Netflix cartoons – for the babba when she takes a break from the bundu-bashing!
Frikkie also did our solar installation. We’ve got three batteries and two panels, allowing for up to 1.2kwa usage.
Possibly the biggest addition to the cabin was the wooden deck – tripling the size of the cabin’s living area. Our builder, Stephen Butler from Montagu, is a genius and threw in a rock fireplace for good measure!
He was very impressed with the wood we got for the job, courtesy of Rhino Wood. A lot of people have been asking about the wood, because it’s a lot heavier and harder than normal pine. If anyone out there is thinking of building in wood soon, you might want to read up on their modification process.
Modification of wood is a treatment process that changes the chemical structure of the wood from the surface to the core, thereby altering the wood’s physical properties. The results are improved durability, enhanced stable mechanical properties and aesthetics, and reduced movement such as cupping, checking, opening of joints and premature failure of coatings.
It also looks pretty amazing – so much so that we did the whole of the inside of the cabin in Rhino Wood!
The swimming pool is also nearly complete, and just waiting for the top lip to cover the gap around the sides. It’s a portable pool with a low-voltage pump – but looks a lot better in wood, I thought!
Whilst fully off the grid with rainwater tank and solar power, amenities include:
Add to that the multitude of peaks to conquer hiking, plus the endless farm roads to cycle on, you will struggle to leave.
Once complete (in the next month, fingers crossed), Cabine du Cap will be available for daily, weekly and monthly rental. allowing couples to indulge in the glorious sights and sounds of the wild Klein Karoo.
The main cabin sleeps two, with a luxury tent also available for an extra couple / kids. Cabine du Cap is fully serviced, with optional extras available, including ‘Breakfast in the boma’, and the ‘Bush G&T combo.’
Emergency stocks of Boekenhoutskloof wines, including Chocolate Block, Wolftrap (red, white and rosé) and Porcupine Ridge will always be available.
To ensure comfort and privacy, a small management team will be living on the property (about 200m from the camp) and is available by walkie-talkie, 24/7.
