Having to come up with an idea for a date that is actually interesting, so as to keep your date impressed with the all-new faux you so that they hang around long enough for you introduce them to your parents (who are already convinced you’re going to be a spinster), is enough to make anyone find themselves with more month than money left.
But just how does South Africa compare to the rest of the world when it comes to how much people spend on an average date? Not too shabby, actually.
Coming in as the most expensive city out of 47 “major global cities to have dinner, see a film, take a taxi or combine these on a ‘cheap date’,” reports Business Tech, is none other than Zurich.
In the Swiss city, a night out for two, which includes the above-mentioned activities, comes in at around R2 645 ($195.90).
Here’s where the rest sit as well as some comparative information:
Japan’s Tokyo and Oslo in Norway are next on the list of the priciest places for courtship, Deutsche Bank’s special report: Mapping the World’s Prices 2017 found.
However, Zurich also has the highest average salaries, followed by US cities and Sydney. People living in Jakarta, Manila or Rio could potentially increase their salary tenfold by moving to the Swiss city.
London has slipped out of the top 10 cities for salaries following the depreciation of sterling after the Brexit vote.
And South Africa? Well, Joburg is one of the cheaper cities, with a night out for two costing just over R810 ($60).
And, of course, there’s a graph to make things a whole lot easier:
While the information was collected by surveying prices on the internet, as well as by using crowdsourcing techniques, all I can say is this: dinner and a movie? This isn’t the 90s.
Netflix and chill, my bru.
