There’s something of a golden rule amongst those who play around in the dirty game that is politics, and it goes something like this – don’t bring up Hitler, ever, because it never ends well.
Donald Trump and his team have merrily torn up the rule book over the past year or so, and it’s tough not to feel just a touch for the foot soldiers who must defend him.
At the forefront of that battle stands Sean Spicer, who last night well and truly stepped in a pile of turd completely of his own doing.
Here is the moment that he decided a comparison between Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and Adolf Hitler was a good idea:
I see he has adopted his boss’s mentality of speaking first, engaging brain second.
When he realised what he had done, an apology was hastily put together. This from the Daily Beast:
Following the press briefing, Spicer released an additional statement: “In no way was I trying to lessen the horrendous nature of the Holocaust, however, I was trying to draw a contrast of the tactic of using airplanes to drop chemical weapons on innocent people.” An additional statement added that “Any attack on innocent people is reprehensible and inexcusable.”
You can almost hear Donald fuming in front of the telly, lounging in his bathrobe.
Next up, Spicer tries to battle his way back from the abyss on CNN:
I would be surprised if Spicer makes it to the end of the year before getting the sack. Quite who steps up to take his place is another matter, but at least they’ll know what they’re in for before signing on the dotted line.
