Friday saw a pretty peaceful march to Parliament here in Cape Town, complete with plenty of shuffling and awkward clapping.
Marches were also largely peaceful in Jozi, but it was what happened afterwards that led DA supporter Kade Guerreiro to fear for his life.
Once the Newtown march was finished. Kade and a friend returned to his vehicle, parked outside the High Court.
While walking down Albertina Sisulu Road things took a nasty turn, with this below from TimesLive:
“What had happened was that we were told to stay away from Luthuli House‚ and obviously we did‚ we were two blocks up… making our way to the car. A man came behind us‚ screaming and said ‘run‚ run’. Obviously we started running‚” he said.
Guerreiro was seen running away from a group of people‚ some carrying sticks‚ branches and rocks. He was unable to escape‚ and got cornered meters away‚ where he was assaulted.
“Something must have hit my head… I hit the floor‚ people starting kicking and punching me‚” he said.
There are two videos of the incident, with the first leading up to the attack and the second showing police intervening:
Here’s Kade describing the incident and the aftermath:
Despite the attack, he remains determined:
Guerreiro spoke outside the Johannesburg Central police station where he had gone to open a case of assault.
Guerreiro said he didn’t harbour any bad feelings toward them.
“I actually pity them. I say that because, are you happy to have attacked another South African? You were happy to kick me in the face while I was down,” he said.
“I am even more involved now. As a young South African it concerns me that this is the path that South Africa is currently on.
“We need to stand together as South Africans‚ regardless of where we come from‚ our political background and things like that‚ we need to be united as South Africans‚” he said.
They say to fight fire with fire, but in this case the moral high ground seems the best option.
Incidents of violence, as well as those who insist on protesting with racially insensitive placards, only serves to allow Zuma and his cronies to delegitimise what is turning into a massive show of citizenry force.
Fight the good and decent fight.
