Carrying around a pro golfer’s bags might seem like a somewhat thankless task, but there’s serious money to be made if the golfer starts cashing cheques.
Take for example Spaniard Sergio Garcia, who finally managed to secure a major with a playoff win against Justin Rose at last night’s Masters.
Having tamed Augusta, Garcia is rewarded with a purse of $1,98 million – a cool R27,5 million at the time of writing.
He won’t be the only one smiling, because South African caddie Glen Murray just banked some serious dosh too. Below from Sport24:
Murray, who hails from Durban, was stunned by Garcia’s win, and was quoted by ESPN as saying, “I thought I’d be more emotional!”
Murray has been caddie for most of Garcia’s professional career with the South African reminiscing it was “almost from the beginning.”
There was however, a short year and a half break in 2014, but Murray got back to carrying his bag – and it has certainly paid off…
The caddies who’ve seen their partner don the green jacket get to keep the flags from the 18th hole of a major – Murray now has one from the Masters.
While deals between players and their caddies vary, Murray can realistically expect to receive at least 10% of Garcia’s $1.98m pay cheque for his victory, which amounts to a rather sizeable R2.75m.
Almost R3 million – that will do.
In case you missed it, here’s the moment Sergio drained the winning putt and landed that whopping payday:
A special shout out for Charl Schwartzel, too, whose third place finish saw him net $748 000 (R10,4 million).
