When describing mohair products, one generally use the words “luxury”, “sought-after” or even “exquisite”.
It’s obvious, seeing as what you are describing are pieces like blankets, scarves and throws knitted out of mohair just in time for winter.
But when it comes to mohair and fashion, that’s where things get interesting.
I first came across Ryan Roche and her divine clothing range a few years back when she competed in the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund in 2014. Roche’s philosophy was simple: to create sustainable modern and minimal knitwear.
And, damn, did she kick it.
At one point during the show judges questioned Roche on her philosophy, at the time predicting that she won’t go far as no one wants high-end fashion knitwear pieces.
Well, they were wrong.
From t-shirts to dresses, Roche has the ability to deftly knit luxurious pieces that are not only beautiful to look at but ideal for winter, too:
What’s our involvement in mohair rising to the top? South Africa is the world’s leading mohair producer – yup, number one.
And, thankfully, Roche isn’t the only one doing this, because mohair is the perfect winter fabric. When the temperature is cool, mohair keeps you warm, but as soon as the temperature rises, mohair has the ability to cool down.
Increasingly, as local and sustainable products pop up around the world, others are taking to creating clothing out of these natural fibres and this is exactly what local advocates, Mohair South Africa, want you to support.
Going above and beyond the usual, designers are using local mohair fibres to create the perfect high-end fashion wear for both men and women:
Don’t believe me? Just take a look at what was found on the runway this season:
While South Africa is the largest producer of mohair in the world, it’s pretty cool to see how much of our product is being used internationally and for good reason, too.
