I recently watched a documentary that painted Val Kilmer as an egomaniac, an actor who was out of control following the success of Top Gun and a few other films.
Most people mellow with age and leave all that behind them, and the same can be said for Val. That doesn’t mean he can’t up the weirdness ante, though, and his Twitter account is a prime example of that.
It’s his recent Cate Blanchett-related tweets that have been put under the spotlight:
OK, that last one is a little weird.
After the media picked up on the vibe, Kilmer defended himself whilst on stage in California on Wednesday night. Here’s the Daily Mail:
The 57-year-old Batman Forever star was there to introduce a special screening of his one-man play, Citizen Twain, but addressed the controversy, saying: ‘I wrote nice things about Cate Blanchett on Twitter and now I’m a pervert.’
He continued: ‘I don’t know why loving an actor that’s so talented is creepy, but I guess I’m creepy’…
‘It makes no sense. I didn’t say anything weird,’ he said. ‘I write about all my friends. There’s no story. Nothing weird.’
The pair last appeared together back in 2003’s The Missing, so it looks like he’s been sitting on these tweets for a while.
Preceding those tweets above was this gem:
Thanks for the close up, champ.
He went on:
‘I’ve never done said or written a single idea that wasn’t of the highest respect and admiration for #cateblanchett or any other great talent … She’s a friend of mine and I’ve met her husband thru the years and we’ve all gotten along just fine.’
The Top Gun star added: ‘Anyone who thinks I need to curb my … Enthusiasm for a great rare artist doesn’t understand how difficult the job is and how we artist count on the respect of our peers. She will … Back up every word I say n love that I say I love her. I would love an actor I didn’t even enjoy if he flew the world to talk about a role.’
Cate doesn’t have Twitter so hasn’t issued a response, but I’m sure Val means well so maybe it’s no harm done.
Another recent tweet while we’re here:
Thanks for rap music, Val.
