In an effort to honour the legend who has been in many South African’s living rooms for decades, and has been referred to as the “face of South African entertainment”, an epic tombstone was created for Joe “Sdumo” Mafela.
Designed by Bataung Memorial Tombstones, the creation for Mafela’s final resting place is basically a replica of a lounge.
It has been deemed a “masterpiece” by the creator, with Times Live reporting that the company’s CEO Lebohang Khitsane said:
The family approached us to come up with a stone that adequately represented the actor’s life and we decided on the design. We wanted to reflect how Joe entered many of our living rooms and kept us entertained through his shows. The family was extremely happy with the design and our team worked hard to make it in just three days.
Since the unveiling of the tombstone, photographs have been doing the rounds on social media, showing the details which include a couch, coffee table, plasma television (with a Samsung logo), a decoder and two remotes, one for DStv and the other universal.

Neither the family nor the company would comment on how much it cost, other than that it ran into “hundreds of thousands of rand”.
Mafela family spokesperson Millicent “Milly” Mulelu said:
It wasn’t about the money, it was about giving Joe a fitting farewell and paying proper tribute to him. He was such an important part of people’s lives and we really loved the idea of having him immortalised like this. Joe loved nothing more than to come home at the end of the day and just sit on the couch and watch TV.
Consider this an apt resting place for him, then.
