A contractor in Randburg stumbled upon a stash of weapons while busy with alterations on a building. A wee bit suspect, he tipped off the police who then descended on the scene.
Raiding the building, the police found “sixty homemade hand grenades‚ seven AK-47 assault rifles‚ 16 pistols‚ 11 revolvers and hundreds of rounds of ammunition,” reports Times Live.
According to EWN, a suicide vest with “fitted explosives” was also discovered, and police stated they are not ruling out the possibility of planned terrorism activities.
Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo told Times Live that:
We understand that the building has a new owner so when the contract workers were busy renovating it‚ they found a bag that looked suspicious and they called the police.
We then came and summoned our Bomb Disposal Unit as well as our Dog Unit. When we opened the bag‚ there were indeed explosives and we then went on to search the building.
In just one of the rooms in the basement‚ police found AK-47s‚ revolvers‚ R1s‚ pistols‚ bombs and “quite a lot of ammunition”. Check:
Although no one has yet been arrested in connection with the cache, the police are investigating who the building used to belong to.
In the meantime, the area around the Rand Centre has been evacuated and remains closed.
I would hate to know how many more of these types of weapons caches exist in the country.
