If you’re a regular reader of 2OV, you may well have heard us harp on about the ever-changing environment that is our local fashion industry.
With a general shift in consumer mind-set (something we covered HERE), manufacturers and businesses are putting a premium on the value of sourcing and producing locally.
Leading the way on that front is TCI Apparel, the largest clothing supplier in the Western Cape, who have a proven track record of pioneering more sustainable methods of production.
Wendy Gamiet, Chief Operations Executive at TCI Apparel reveals exactly what her role involves and what keeps her inspired.
As Chief Operating Executive for TCI Apparel, you have responsibility for operations across TCI Apparel (Cape Town, Durban and Ladysmith). What are the things you need to learn in this role?
I need to be consistent throughout the various departments in our business. I had to learn how to delegate and give clear instructions. One of the most fundamental things in my role is to make decisions. I also had to find a strong support structure for myself. All of this has taught me to be humble.
What are your most important priorities at TCI Apparel?
To keep our workforce motivated and happy. I also have to make sure that our customers are satisfied. On a daily basis, I have to ensure compliance with operating across all our facilities.
What do you see as the keys to success in revitalising the clothing and textile industry in South Africa?
We need to develop a comprehensive supply chain. A quick response in product development and the manufacturing process.
What three words would you use to describe your leadership style?
Humble, consistent and proactive
How did you become interested in a career in clothing manufacturing?
Growing up on the Cape Flats and having to find a job at the age of 16 is no teenager’s plan for their lives, yet God had a greater plan and through Him, I achieved all things.
How do you define success?
Success is the determination to achieve all things possible.
What recent accomplishments are you proud of?
With continuous workplace training and development, TCI Apparel Cape Town is the most diverse plant Southern Africa has ever seen.
What is the best part of working for TCI Apparel?
My CEO values my worth. Every day is better than the day before.
Wendy’s CEO is renowned businessman Herman Pillay, who has had success around the globe and here at home.
With their commitment to nurturing and developing the country’s best young design and fashion talents, TCI Apparel is a sustainable business model many could learn from.
