Just in case you were wondering what’s been burning down at the Cape Town harbour since yesterday morning, read on.
According to News24, around 800 000 polystyrene containers are on fire on a 93-metre long fishing trawler, called Verano Fort Vila.
The blaze, seen and smelt from various places, began yesterday morning and one can still see smoke bellowing in a south-easterly direction across the peninsula.
Five crew members have been evacuated from the ship and all of the harbours’ employees are on duty trying to deal with the situation. News24:
Six firefighting vehicles were attending to the incident. The ship, operating under the Vanuatu flag, had 100 000 litres of diesel on board.
Transnet said in a statement that:
The immediate concern is to ensure no further injury‚ loss of life or environmental pollution‚ as the vessel is said to be carrying 150kl of fuel and 800 000 pieces of plastic packaging material.
