You may remember that former Wits SRC leader Mcebo Dlamini wasn’t shy of declaring his love for ‘ol Adolf Hitler (HERE), and it appears he isn’t alone on the Wits campus.
Yesterday saw some hardcore anti-Semitic graffiti appearing on university buildings, which Wits Fees Must Fall student leader Catherine Seabe believes is linked to demands that Dlamini be released from prison.
In case you missed it, Dlamini is being held at Johannesburg Central Prison on five charges‚ including public violence and assault.
Let’s take a look at that graffiti:
Here’s the Mail & Guardian:
Seabe [said] that she would be meeting with one of the people involved in the graffiti work on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the statement.
Hang on, they know who is behind the graffiti and deem a meeting necessary to let them air their ‘grievances’? I’m not convinced, but on we go…
“At this point in time I’m waiting to get a report from other SRC members with regards to the “inspiration”, I guess, of the graffiti, but I will be speaking to one of the graffiti artists so I can probably only say something more a bit later,” Seabe said.
As yet, no one has publicly taken responsibility for the graffiti.
As you can imagine the graffiti hasn’t sat well with the South African Union of Jewish Students (SAUJS), who issued a condemnatory statement:
“SAUJS unequivocally condemns the blatant anti-Semitism that is being demonstrated. There can be no justification for such hateful acts,” the union said.
“SAUJS maintains that every student on campus should be free from intimidation, regardless of race, religion, gender or self-identification.”
Feel free to let us know the result of that meeting with the anti-Semites whenever you’re ready, Catherine.
