When news broke back in early September that Busisiwe Mkhwebane had acted as a spy while working as an immigration officer for Home Affairs in China, no one really took notice, as she was only a “proposed” Public Protector at that stage.
People just thought the DA’s objection in Parliament was another pathetic ploy at disrupting South African politics.
But, boy, were we wrong.
While discussing whether or not Mkhwebane will be an apt Public Protector – the Public Protector that South Africa needs right now – skeptics in the ‘Can we trust SA’s new public protector?’ conversation on Gather Online outweighed any supporters.
Some people brought up the fact that Mkhwebane had requested Gupta-owned news station ANN7 be played on the televisions in the reception room of her Pretoria office during her first week, while others questioned Mkhwebane’s focus on grass-root queries instead of the Gupta’s state-capture inquiry.
Then Adam S shared this video:
The thing is, before we had any idea who Thuli Madonsela’s successor would be, the DA stood against Mkhwebane as a choice. They were the only party in the National Assembly to actively oppose her nomination.
This, from News24:
The DA had opposed her nomination, claiming she was working for the State Security Agency while employed as an immigration officer in China. Mkhwebane said she was working for home affairs at the time
But Mkhwebane fought back when she released a statement:
“They said they have sources. Let them reveal their sources and let them reveal what kind of evidence they have that I was working as a spy in China.
It was reckless for the DA to make such claims without having credible information as it could harm relations between South Africa and China, she said.
At the time, the DA dared Mkhwebane to prove it wrong and do her job independently and impartially.
Well, pity that’s not happening, especially after Mkhwebane made a statement saying the Public Protector’s role is to work with the government.
At a time like this? I don’t think so..
We’re having a lot of fun watching the discussions develop on Gather Online. Add your comment to this gathering HERE, and speak to likeminded people about South Africa’s current affairs. And for the newbies, if you have no idea what Gather Online is, here’s a breakdown:
