I remember my parents and all their friends telling me to save my money when I was a kid. Obviously I didn’t and things worked out fine anyway. But I wish they had told me about this.
I never had life insurance, because there wasn’t anyone to leave the money to if I died. I wasn’t married and didn’t have any children that I knew of. The selfish bachelor in me didn’t even think I would need it when I did get married, because if I did die then I’d be gone and I wouldn’t be exposed to any hardships my wife was suffering.
That was before I DID get married and DID have a kid. Now that I have that perspective and have felt that emotion and love a husband and father has for his family, there is no way I can let them suffer any financial hardship when I’m gone.
BUT…
Why the hell did no-one tell me as a kid that my life insurance premiums would be so low if I started earlier? At almost 40 (would you believe) my life insurance premiums are MUCH higher than if I took out a policy in my 20s or early 30s. I’m obviously getting the best deal possible through 1Life, but the point is I could be paying a much lower monthly rate if I started earlier.
So if there’s anything I can advise to today’s millennials, it’s this – blow all your money on cheap booze and partying, after your monthly life insurance premium comes off your account.
You’ll be the envy of your mates in a few years, I promise you that.
