If you’re ever going to publicly claim something, make sure you have the evidence to back it up.
That’s one lesson Domino’s Pizza learnt, after they declared their pizza was “Voted Tastiest Pizza” in South Africa in a Google advertisement.
According to one competitor, however, this is just not the case.
Of course, we can agree, because there’s nothing better than The Rotherham from Butler’s, thin base and all, delivered hot to your door.
Yeah yeah, that’s our opinion. According to TimesLive:
The decision follows a complaint by advertising agency‚ FCB Joburg‚ on behalf of the Famous Brands Management Company to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) against Domino’s.
The agency argued that the claim “Voted Tastiest Pizza” was used in a comparative manner compared to all pizza available in South Africa. And furthermore‚ the agency said that it was not aware of any “voting” competition in which Domino’s came out on top‚ whether regionally or nationally.
“In addition‚ given the sheer size and popularity of the complainant’s Debonairs Pizza versus Domino’s Pizza‚ based on Debonairs’ own market research results‚ the respondent’s claim is highly unlikely”.
Domino’s held that the claim was “merely an administrative oversight” and will ask their digital development team to remove tasty reference.
Now, Domino’s Pizza has voluntarily ceased using the phrase – and I think we know who the winner is already.
