John McEnroe is the bad boy of tennis.
His confrontational on-court behaviour often landed him in trouble with umpires and tennis authorities, and even saw him featured in House of Pain’s ‘Jump Around’ lyrics:
I’ll serve your ass like John McEnroe.
So who better to play the tennis superstar than our favourite off- and on-screen weirdo, Shia LaBeouf?
The latest biopic will focus on the notorious rivalry between McEnroe and Björn Borg, played by Sverrir Gudnason.
What a fitting duo, don’t you think?
Simply titled Borg/McEnroe, the movie is directed by Janus Metz Pedersen, a Danish documentary filmmaker, and will focus on the 1980 Wimbledon’s Men Single’s Final.
Of course, McEnroe had something to say on the situation:
I don’t know if they are planning on doing the whole movie without input or any type of arrangement from me or Bjorn. I don’t know how you can do it without ever meeting me. Maybe you could talk to a few of my friends. I can barely remember what I was like 36 years ago when I was 21 years old. It could be entertaining. If it’s good, it’d be cool. Let’s hope.
I am sure Shia will do everything in his power to make this the best portrayal of McEnroe there ever was, although, with his history, anything could happen.
For now let’s just enjoy some of John’s best on-court tantrums:
