You know we love our yachts, but so do you guys so it’s all good.
This past summer, the rich and famous spent their time on the Med and we got to hear all about their private lifestyles.
But what does it take to make one of these bad boys?
Superyacht designer Andy Waugh opened up about the highs and lows of working with clients, and said that although he has designed plenty, it’s always difficult to get someone to buy into it.
Waugh’s latest design, Epiphany, might not be the biggest yacht ever to be built, but, depending on the client, it could be the world’s most extravagant and expensive, costing around $667 million (R9 billion).
But why? According to CNN:
Its owner will be able to enjoy an entire deck to themselves, complete with private cinema, jacuzzi, gym and spa, while guests will be able to take advantage of the same luxuries on the VIP deck below.
If it’s gold swan taps in every bathroom, then the price of the interior can be three times a more modern design.
Casual.
Taking around five years to build, Waugh says the risk is that his clients, being billionaires, can get bored of a project on a whim. Clients also harbour their own ideas of what they want, liking a few elements of original designs, but factoring in a change here or an upgrade there.
One client even dropped a deal midway because he couldn’t sell his boat.
While some guys love yachting, he said others are just buying a yacht because they have some extra cash floating around.
If you have the cash and can see yourself sitting pretty on that private deck, just give Waugh a call – I am sure he will appreciate the interest.
But if you can’t (it’s okay), the closest thing you will get to it in Cape Town is chartering Princess Emma, which will cost you R38 000 to anchor at Clifton for three hours.
Now that’s casual.
