Taxi drivers, by far, cause the most traffic disruption on local roads – but I wouldn’t go so far as to call them the worst drivers, because they know how to handle a vehicle a lot better than most (until THIS happens).
Anyway, Wheels24 did a little survey with its readers, asking them to vote for the city and province in South Africa with the “worst” taxi drivers.
To many, “worst” implies complete disregard for the law.
52 907 people participated in the online survey and the majority voted Johannesburg has having the worst taxi drivers, with 64% of the votes. Here are the final results:
Johannesburg 64% – 15437 votes
Cape Town 12% – 2795 votes
Pretoria 11% – 2651 votes
Durban 10% – 2375 votes
Port Elizabeth 2% – 541 votes
Polokwane 2% – 473 votes
I don’t believe this has much ground to stand on, as you can’t vote if you have never experienced another cities’ taxis, which I doubt everyone has.
Anyway, when it came down to provinces, of course Gauteng claimed that title, too:
Gauteng 67% – 19 120 votes
KwaZulu-Natal 13% – 3851 votes
Western Cape 12% – 3531 votes
Eastern Cape 5% – 1374 votes
Limpopo 3% – 758 votes
To make you feel a little better, here’s one motorist putting a taxi driver in his place and it’s pretty satisfying to watch:
