Tension between North and South Korea is nothing new, but things are really coming to a head of late.
Kim Jong-un is fond of displays of military strength from time to time, a classic ‘small man syndrome’ move that is unpopular with their neighbours.
In response to the escalating tension South Korea have gone on record with what they’re capable of – this below from CNN:
Asked in parliament Wednesday if there was a special forces unit already assembled that could eliminate North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, [defense minister ] Han Min-koo said: “Yes, we do have such a plan. ”
“South Korea has a general idea and plan to use precision missile capabilities to target the enemy’s facilities in major areas as well as eliminating the enemy’s leadership,” he added.
It has long been suspected that such a plan was in place but the minister’s candid answer surprised some.
“A president would want to have the option,” says Daniel Pinkston of Troy University. “… Not presenting that to the president, not training for it and having that capability would be a mistake.”
Perhaps it is merely talk, but you can’t imagine Kim will be all that pleased. Then again, when he announced that North Korea had successfully tested a nuclear warhead two weeks back he knew he was poking the bear.
It’s kinda difficult to verify any information coming out Pyongyang, but here’s the ever-increasing strength of tests they’ve claimed:
South Korea are calling their plan a ‘worst case scenario’, assuming that North Korea are ready for a sixth tests:
Earlier this month, Leem Ho Young, Chief Director of Strategic Planning at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, described a new system called the Korea Massive Punishment & Retaliation (KMPR) just hours after North Korea claimed it had tested a nuclear warhead.
It would involve surgical missile attacks, exclusive special warfare units and an ability to strike North Korea’s leadership if South Korea feels threatened by nuclear attack.
Here’s the response from North Korea to those assassination claims, according to the Daily Caller:
“The US imperialists and the South Korean puppet warmongers anti-DPRK military provocations have pushed the situation on the Korean Peninsula to the uncontrollable and irreversible phase of the outbreak of nuclear war,” the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) said in a statement Thursday.
We may have a despotic lunatic ruling our neighbours to the north, but at least he doesn’t have the capacity to launch all out nuclear war.
He does have a truly awful statue in his likeness though, and for that we’ll always be thankful (HERE).
