An incident filmed over the weekend shows a police officer smashing a car window, and then attempting to saw it open with a penknife.
He must have been blinded by anger to do such a silly thing while being filmed.
According to the driver – and filmer – Leon Fontana, two police officers stopped him on his way to the shops, mistaking him for his cousin. There has been no suggestion as to why this would have made a difference.
The violence that followed was unnecessary, and the 25-year-old said he was petrified as the officer was aggressive from the get go:
My car belongs to me, I’ve got a licence, I’m fully insured, I have an MOT. For some reason the officer thought I was my cousin, even though I showed him my ID and took the keys out.
He was just aggressive from the get go and then it was just ‘smash, smash, smash’. Even if I was someone who only had a provisional licence, that’s not the way an officer should conduct themselves.
I didn’t know what to do. I was in shock. My body just froze.
I was just shouting ’I’ve got a licence, I’ve got insurance’ but he continued to be aggressive and smashing the glass.
When he pulled out a flick knife there were ricochets from the glass. For my own safety I had to get out the car.
Once Fontana had left the car, the other police officer seemed to recognise him and let go.
The officer has been placed on restricted duties, and an investigation is under way.
Thank goodness UK police officers don’t carry guns.
