If you ask someone who has lived in and around the city since the 1960’s they’ll have plenty to say about how things have changed. The thing is, do they have the pictures to back that up?
Property prices going through the roof, traffic becoming a major problem, tourists flocking to our shores – we sure do live in a different Cape Town than days of old.
If it’s pictures of back then you’re after the go-to man is Etienne du Plessis, who has put together a fantastic collection on Flickr (HERE).
Whilst the angle from which the pictures are taken differs, thus making an exact comparision tough, here’s an aerial shot from 1977 followed by a modern day one:
That stadium certainly stands out. These stats below from BusinessTech:
In the 2011 census, StatsSA put Cape Town’s population at 3,740,026, which Brookings Institute estimated in 2015 at 4,178,700.
In 1970, the city’s population was recorded at 1,114,000, and five years later it was put at 1,339,000.
Right, let’s carry on exploring old-school Cape Town with the help of Etienne’s Flickr page:
DF Malan Airport, circa 1968
Grand Parade, 1951
Newlands Cricket Stadium, 1985 – rocking the ‘tache.
Sea Point, circa 1958
Clifton, circa 1950
Seriously cool, right? Etienne has hundreds of photos from back in the day, so explore to your heart’s content HERE.
Me thinks a few of those would look good hanging on the walls around the house, a lekker frame completing the picture. If canvas prints are your thing best you talk to ATB Photo, use the code 2ov15 for a 15% discount and add a touch of class to your living space.
