After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 1961, Robert Morin then spent his years working at the university’s Dimond Library – it was clear that Morin loved the university he attended.
Morin also loved movies. From 1979 to 1997, Morin watched more than 22 000 videos.
After he satisfied his passion for movies, he turned his attention to books, deciding to read — in chronological order — every book published in the United States from 1930 to 1940 except for children’s books, textbooks and books about cooking and technology.
When he died at the age of 77, he had come as far as 1938, the year he was born.
You see, while Morin had dedicated nearly 50 years of his life to the library, he had very humble spending habits. His financial advisor reported that his client rarely went out and never spent much. He drove an old, reliable car, and regularly ate frozen dinners – so saving came naturally.
But this caught everyone by surprise because when he passed, Morin had left a substantial amount to the university. $4 million (R59 million) in fact. Here’s how he divided the money, according to Boston Magazine:
Of Morin’s posthumous gift, $100,000 was specifically dedicated to the Dimond Library, helping renovate multimedia rooms, create scholarships for work-study students, and provide support for staff who wish to further study library science.
Morin developed a love of football from watching games on television during the last 15 months of his life spent in an assisted living center. Fittingly, $1 million will go toward a video scoreboard at the school’s new football stadium.
“Bob’s demonstrated commitment to UNH through his philanthropy is tremendously inspiring,” UNH President Mark Huddleston said in a release. “We are committed to providing the resources needed to ensure every student achieves professional success and Bob’s gift will play a major role in that effort.”
Another $2.5 million will help establish a career center for students and alumni on campus, Huddleston said.
It is quite inspiring to see someone put money into something they love. Although we have no solid details on his personal life, it just shows how important it is to have a financial advisor to help set you for life – and getting your general affairs set up is something you should definitely do sooner rather than later.
Just ask the guys over at Consequence, who will take time out of their day to sit down and have a chat with you about where you see yourself and your finances in the future.
Give them a call and be like Robert Morin. Sort of.
