Cape Town wasn’t the only place in the world to have heavy rainfall this weekend.
The Mississippi River runs straight through the state of Louisiana, and, while its capital Baton Rouge may have been in the news for the mass reaction to police brutality a little while ago, it is now in the news for something much more worrying.
Since Friday, floods in the area have killed 11 people.
In 24 hours, 53 cm of rain fell in Livingston Parish (an hour outside of Baton Rouge), just under the 24-hour state record of 55 cm set in 1962.
While more than 10 000 people were waking up in shelters on Monday morning, the flooding affected homes and businesses in the area. It is estimated that 80% of the homes in Baton Rouge have been damaged.
Parts of the flooded area -Tangipahoa, St. Helena, East Baton Rouge and Livingston – have been declared major disaster areas by the U.S. government, and reports suggest Taylor Swift has donated $1 million in relief.
