Cape Comedian Cracks Joke About Why Wayde Runs So Quickly, Social Media Attacks

Being a comedian these days means skirting a finer line than ever, something this chap is finding out after his racy Wayde van Niekerk post.

Hey Ellen, looks like you’re not the only one under attack for cracking a joke on social media about Olympic speedsters (HERE).

We all know about Wayde and his miraculous exploits over in Rio by now, and the fact that he was wearing a R10 million watch whilst doing so only makes this story better (HERE).

Whilst South Africans as a whole celebrated Wayde’s success, the coloured community in particular were bursting with pride. Hence the hashtag #colouredexcellence that did the rounds, and hence the shout-out from Cape comedian Devdondidit.

Captioning his Facebook post ‘Well done Wayde’s World SA. ‪#‎proudlysouthafrican 🇿🇦’, he then used these pictures for a laugh:

Turns out not everyone thought this was funny, with the Daily Voice carrying some of the responses:

Cathy Glazer Venter commented: “I’m white. How rude… I acknowledge his God-given talent.”

Fred Fisher wrote: “For Devon to say that us whites see coloured’s in that way of crime, so to say, is a genuine slap in our faces. This guy needs a real job. Being a comedian is not for him, because he’s not funny.”

Lucky Jama Benya wrote: “This is bulls***…. Why are you people perpetuating this racial segregation… this is nauseating.”

Thapelo Trompies Mahuta: “Whoever thinks this is funny is f***ed up.. White ppl won medals and no racist remarks was posted. (sic)”

Janine Cloete Meyer said: “I think you must keep your views to yourself, Mr. @DevDonDidIt you are making coloureds look stupid, including yourself seeing that you are also a COLOURED.”

Oh, I forgot to mention that Dev is coloured himself. The comedian was quick to fire back:

“Being a comedian, whenever something major happens, I always search for the humour in it. It was never a racial ploy. If we cannot laugh at ourselves we will never get over anything. We are a unique nation of colourful people. I have the greatest respect for Wayde and his achievement,” says Devon.

Hey guys, remember a time when we all used to laugh at each other’s differences and similarities together?

Does anyone have a checklist of what comedians aren’t allowed to make jokes about these days? Just asking…
