Michael Phelps is GOAT.
You’ve probably seen that written somewhere, and in case you’re wondering it means Greatest Of All Time. 22 golds will lock that down, although sometimes you don’t need to rack up that many to be declared the greatest your sport has ever seen.
Take American Simone Biles, who yesterday won the Olympic all-round title and cemented her place in history. This from USA Today:
She finished 2.1 points ahead of Final Five teammate Aly Raisman, by far her largest margin of victory in her three-year – and counting — win streak.
“I would say yes,” Martha Karolyi said when asked if Biles was the greatest ever. “For me, the most special was my first, from Nadia, and the last, from Simone. Those really stand out for me.
“I would put Simone now on top,” she added.
This was not a cliff-hanger, Biles having established her dominance long ago. She hasn’t lost an all-around competition since the spring of 2013, claiming three world titles and four U.S. crowns in the process.
She hasn’t lost since 2013 people, how mental is that?
You’ll have to make due with her performance in the team event rather than her individual gold, because American broadcasters NBC hold all the rights and they’ve blocked the content in S.A.
That’s the Olympic spirit right there…

Given that she is now 19 one cannot be certain that we’ll see her at the next Olympics, given that 23 is pretty much over the hill when it comes to gymnastics, but whether she turns up or not she seems to have GOAT locked down.
