Ever found yourself in a sticky situation with the law and subtly suggested a bribe? What about the other way around – has the police officer requested a bribe?
We already know how much of a common occurrence bribery is in South Africa, from corporate situations to law enforcement encounters, and that the amount paid can be anything from over R100 000 to as little as, well, R150 and a Coca-Cola.
That’s what two Mount Road police officers in PE requested in return for not reporting a 25-year-old driver, caught over the legal limit in a road block.
The accused, Sergeant Mziwandile Mventshana, 43, and colleague, Constable Khayalethu Hlamvana, 37, were both found guilty on charges of fraud by the PE Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday.
Mventshana got seven years for accepting the bribe, three of which were suspended for five years. Hlamvana will be sentenced in September.
The motorist laid a charge against the two right after the incident, driving straight to the Mount Road police station. After the Hawks investigated, it appeared another motorist had laid a similar complaint about the two officers that day.
I wonder what will happen to that cop who was filmed taking a bribe in the video we showed you yesterday.
