South Africa may have lost beloved motor speedster Gugu Zulu yesterday, but it looks like athlete Akani Simbine honoured the man in the best way possible.
Simbine romped home in Budapest in a new national record time of 9.89 seconds, beating Jamaican sprint star Asafa Powell in the process.
With that time next to his name, Simbine now leaps to fifth place in the world rankings, which means with a little luck he may nab a medal in Rio.

He wasn’t done there though, because he also clocked 20.16 in the 200m final. That makes a mockery of the fact that he was excluded from the 200m roster for the Games by Athletics SA, but given their long history of botching just about everything we shouldn’t be surprised.
