Normally I’d say I’m jealous of those of you zooming off from Cape Town Airport to some far-flung destination (unless it’s Jozi, early morning jibe), but today you might have a struggle on your hands.
Last night saw the N2 grind to a standstill, then be shut down, with two buses torched amidst another round of political unrest.
Last night’s story on TimesLive:
…news filtering through from the Mother City indicate that at least two buses have been set alight and that protesters have been burning tyres on the freeway.
City of Cape Town Councillor JP Smith told TMG Digital: “The protest started about 6pm in Barcelona informal settlement. It then spilled over to the N2. The protesters burnt tyres and started stoning vehicles. Saps and other law enforcement agencies were called to the scene. The protestors then captured two buses which were on the traffic and set them alight. There were also several injuries during the protest. We do not know the reason for the protest at this stage‚” he said.
This morning the N2 had reopened, although traffic was rumoured to be at a standstill. Authorities had also figured what all the fuss was about, with this from eNCA:
City officials claim residents were demonstrating because they’re unhappy about the ANC’s candidate list.
“We have confirmed that it’s a disagreement between community members or ANC activists about the nomination of a Mr Ngcobo as the ward candidate, so there’s some conflict around that,” said the City’s JP Smith.
ANC supporters unhappy with a candidate – sounds awfully familiar. Oh of course, Tshwane.
Good luck getting to the airport folks, may I suggest you leave a little early and give yourself some wiggle room.
