When schoolkids hop on social media you know it’s only a matter of time until something goes belly up, and here’s the latest example of that playing out.
A pupil from Clifton School in Morningside, one of Durban’s premier private schools, has been suspended while the institution investigates one of his Instagram posts.
No it wasn’t gratuitous use of hashtags, although I wish that was a crime, but rather song lyrics he quoted. This from News24:
A source with knowledge of the incident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it took place two weeks ago.
The pupil had posted a portion of lyrics from the Dr Dre song Medicine Man, featuring Eminem, which was released last year.
The lyrics in questions are understood to be: “I even make the bitches I rape cum.”
Kids are idiots, but you have to do better than that young man.
Here’s Simon Downes, chairperson of the board of directors at Clifton School:
“This matter was brought to the school’s attention shortly after the Instagram posting, and was immediately investigated by the school, with the full support of the student’s parents,” he said.
“The school recognises the serious nature of this issue and dealt with the matter with sensitivity and in the best interests of the student and of society at large. Remedial and disciplinary action, including suspension, has been instituted in terms of the School’s Disciplinary Code, even though the incident did not occur under the school’s control or on its premises,” Downes added
I don’t imagine we have too many high schoolers reading these pages – some of the language we use can be foul – but if you’re out there then we suggest you learn from this lesson and avoid similar follies.
