I’m sure somewhere out there is a reasonably level-headed Trump supporter, becoming caught up in the Orange Menace’s tidal wave of publicity and losing sight of their rationality.
This chap is not that supporter, because he is the embodiment of exactly who a hate-filled campaign appeals to.
Build the wall, ban Muslims from entering, trust no one who isn’t whiter than thou – this is the result of Donald Trump being given a platform to spew his uninformed hate.
Take a look for yourself at what happened at a Trump rally in Phoenix, Arizona. We’ll chat afterwards.
You can’t paint everyone with the same brush, that isn’t fair on Trump supporters who keep their shirts on whilst being racist, but let’s consider this from Gawker:
It was not that long ago that walking down the street with your shirt off screaming “GO FUCKIN’ COOK MY BURRITO BITCH” at suspected Mexican-Americans was frowned upon, but today it’s just part of the electoral discourse, thanks in large part to the ascendance of Donald Trump and his popularity among the “X-Games Klan Sympathizer” cohort.
You can read all summaries in the world of Trump’s various policy stances, such as they are—building a wall, trade isolationism, immigration bans—but none of it will be as illuminating as a shirtless white guy turning red with fury, arteries bulging, screaming the word “TRUMP” over and over again into the faces of American Latinos in a state of apoplexy.
Herein lies one of the most alarming components of the Trump campaign – it has become the central point around which people like this can rally, sharing their hate with others and allowing them the sense that it’s OK to discriminate against others on grounds like race and religion.
Scenes like this are now the norm, and once fires like these are lit they usually take a whole lot of putting out.
