I spoke too soon.
Just yesterday we heard from Charlie Sheen for the first time in ages, talking about his fake cuff links from Donald Trump – and it was a story that had nothing to do with his usual sexual deviances. Well, it didn’t take that long for something to come out.
Luxury Swedish sex toy company LELO wanted to reinvent the condom and they chose Charlie Sheen as their pitchman – an idea not taken too lightly by some of the company’s most loyal customers.
As you know, Sheen has a history of women abuse, and feminist sex workers, bloggers, and educators who once bought LELO’s toys for their sleek vibrator designs are angry.
But what’s worse is that the company saw it coming and tried to deflect it – to no avail. Speaking about their “re-engineered” HEX condoms, which have honeycomb-structured shafts, LELO wrote:
We know Charlie may be a divisive choice for many but it’s also a bold one, and in the fight against STIs we need to make an impact.
It’s a shame that a company which was founded on women’s pleasure, luxury, and quality has resorted to gimmicks and attention-grabbing controversy rather than quality. And the condom itself doesn’t seem all that ‘revolutionary.’
And she’s not the only one. The Daily Beast divulges:
Sex toy critic Dangerous Lilly vowed to never again review a LELO product, writing that the company “went from being first to the party to the late, drunk, rich frat boy that nobody invited.”
Sarah Nitchkey, who runs the sex blog Marvelous Darling, called Sheen the “last straw,” arguing that LELO “only care[s] about women’s health when it sells sex toys.”
And sex toy reviewer Formidable Femme also promised to boycott the company in a moving blog post entitled “I’m a Survivor, and I Will Never Support LELO Again.”
“It is clear to me that this decision was purely motivated by shock value and publicity, without any concern for their customers or the educators, reviewers, or stores that work with them,” Formidable Femme wrote.
Here’s Sheen talking about condom use in LELO’sadvert. Honestly, it’s quite real and he has many points – but that just shows how your past actions can influence your future endeavours.
