Major Tim Peake is back on Earth after an historic six months aboard the International Space Station. He said he feels like he is experiencing the worst hangover, his body adjusting to life back on the planet
He has been plagued with dizziness and vertigo since Saturday morning – the basic symptoms of anyone who has spent a prolonged period in zero gravity, or a few too many ales on a festive weekend.
After spending 186 days up there, during what he described as a “life changing experience”, he said the things he couldn’t wait to experience was seeing his family – and some earthly comforts, like pizza and a cold beer.
Unfortunately, his capsule parachuted down and landed in a deserted desert in Kazakhastan, so there be none of The Rotherham for him.
[Although, if you know your Cape Town history, you’ll know Butler’s drivers will go to the ends of the world to deliver. Check out what they did HERE.]
The UK’s Argus reports more on the British astronauts landing:
After strong winds caused his Soyuz space capsule to turn over several times once it had it touched down, the astronaut looked distinctly unsteady as he was helped from the craft in Kazakhstan at 10.15am on Saturday.
His tiny descent module – little over 7ft long and 7ft in diameter – was charred and still warm to the touch from the fiery 1,600 degree heat of reentry when Maj Peake was lifted out of the capsule by ground crews.
Upon his landing, Major Peake, 44, along with his family, indeed had a lot to say:
“I’m just truly elated. The smells of the Earth are so strong. It’s just wonderful to feel the fresh air.”
He spoke briefly by mobile phone to his parents Nigel and Angela, who live in Chichester, who told reporters they were looking forward to having their son back.
“Job well done,” said Mr Peake, who watched footage of his son’s landing from the European Space Agency’s home base in Cologne, Germany. “I’m so proud of him and what he’s achieved.”
Mrs Peake said she was looking forward to giving her son a hug and her husband agreed: “Yes, even astronauts need hugs.”
Good luck on the hunt for pizza and cold beer, a noble pursuit indeed.
