You know it’s well and truly winter when you bust out the electric blanket. I held out for as long as I could, now I just have to remember to switch the thing on before I hop into bed.
It may have been drizzly these past few days, and we know the Cape could use it, but you can rest assured there will still be plenty of time to enjoy the Cape outdoors in the winter months to follow.
Don’t hole yourself up on the couch and binge on Game of Thrones, you’re better than that, and to inspire you we’re going to show you some of the things we’re looking forward to doing before summer returns.
Maybe you need to get out of the city and enjoy a little country time – here are two gems courtesy of Gummie:
Two Night Glamping Experience On The Banks Of The Breede River
This 2-night stay package will take you straight to the camping paradise. We will set up a pop-up camp at Rivierplaas. Think spacious 100% cotton canvas Bell Tents, furnished with camping beds, comfy mattresses and linen, rugs and solar lights.
Rivierplaas is situated on the banks of Breede river, about 25 kilometers outside of Worcester. Campsites are shady, with big stretched out lawns and child-friendly play areas.
The highlights include the relatively deep swimming area in the Breede river, flying fox, cozy camp fires with braai facilities, showers and flushing toilets.
Sometimes it’s good to treat yourself to the odd glamp – find out more about that experience HERE.
Two-Hour Horse Riding In Franschoek
The guided 2-hour ride takes you through vineyards and orchards with beautiful views over the mountains and landscapes of the Cape Winelands. Some wildlife that may be spotted includes the reedbuck, duiker, guinea fowl, mongoose, caracal, fish eagles and buzzards.
This is a uniquely different way of experiencing the winelands. Start at Simondium and leisurly stroll through the vineyards of the most beautiful area of the Western Cape.
Think about how good that Old Spice guy looked on a horse – all the details on that riding experience HERE.
If you’re thinking those are a little far afield and you’re more of a city slicker type, how about two more options from Gummie that are closer to home?
Yeah, now you’re interested.
Underground Tunnel And Dungeon Tour
During the early days of Cape Town canals and rivers acted as routes of travel and supplied the Company Gardens and ships with fresh water. Sadly, these canals and rivers became an unofficial waste disposal system which was covered up sometime during the late 19th century. Still in existence today though, these tunnels – approximately two meters in diameter – which are located under the busy streets of the CBD and now help with storm water drainage, channel fresh run-off water from Table Mountain (straight into the sea).
This journey through these underground tunnels and beneath the belly of the Mother City is accompanied by qualified guide and a professional rescue medic (just in case), and each explorer gets a permit and a hard hat.
It doesn’t matter what the weather is like if you’re in an underground tunnel, so find out about this exploration HERE.
One last gem to make the most of this city, and this is the least labour-intensive. Why? Because you’re flying like a boss…
Flight departs as the sun is setting over Cape Town. This is the golden hour, when the views of the V&A waterfront, Cape Town CBD, Table Mountain, Dolphin and Sunset beach are more glorious than ever.
The flight is conducted below 1000 feet to allow you a great view of the waves breaking at this beautiful time of the day. The light on the water is always incredible. Enjoy a complimentary bottle of champagne and create special memories that will stay with you forever.
Drinking champagne and enjoying sunset from the air – who said winter has to be a drag?
You can get all the deets on that flight HERE.
What makes all of those above so lekker is that you’re always led by someone in the know, one of the knowledgeable Gummie guides making sure you get the most out of your experience.
We’ve mentioned these guys in the past too – check out their ideas for full moon hikes (HERE), and even some fun times for the good folk of Jozi (HERE).
Happy winter everyone, there goes your excuse for being a hermit.
