In an attempt to do some good, Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri donated $1.2 million to the Scholas Occurentes fund – which is backed by one of his very own, Pope Francis.
However, the amount was donated in pesos ,which amounted to 16 666 000 Argentinian pesos.
See the problem? This made the Catholic leader rather unhappy, because it contained the number 666.
He claimed it contained the number of the beast, a reference from the New Testament. But their relationship goes deeper than that. TIME explains:
The leader of the Catholic Church has a tenuous relationship with the center-right leader of his native Argentina, with his opposition to Macri’s economic policies and austerity measures considered something of an open secret.
So maybe he was just using it as an excuse to turn down the money, rather than tell the truth about his fractious relationship with Argentina’s president.
Odd really, you’d think donations to a good cause would always be welcomed.
