The other day I was at a braai and someone happened to mention that they were now using more than double their usual data usage per month, but they felt like they hadn’t been using their phones more than before.
Someone else chimed in and said they had the same problem, and we knew we were onto something when it came up again in the office.
That’s when we learnt about a little cheeky iOS9 addition that had flown under the radar – something called WiFi Assist.
Turns out that when you’re connected to WiFi and the signal drops, your phone will just switch to data to keep you chugging along.
Turning this off is a bit of a game changer so here’s how you do it : Settings > General > Cellular > WiFi assist. You’ll need to scroll right to the bottom for that option, mind you, they’ve tucked it away.
Turn that off and you don’t have to worry about your phone chugging your data while you think you’re connected to WiFi.
You can read all about that HERE, but we’ve got something else we want to touch on too.
We like to think we’re all clued up on how to go about getting the best cellular deal, but with all the options out there no one really knows if they’ve selected the one that suits their usage most.
Take me, for example, prone to making some rash decisions. I was stung by a nasty end-of-month bill recently, so I headed to Tariffic to see whether I had the right deal for me.
It’s all pretty easy really – I got my itemised billing for my last month’s usage, uploaded it to the site (HERE) and #BOOM, looks like I should switch packages and save me some bucks.
So with a little inside knowledge I could have saved myself more than R800 last month – good to know.
Of course it’s not just Vodacom that you can check out, here’s a few screen’s back:
And I already had a phone, so if I wanted a contract that included one I can select from a host of handsets:
The steps are pretty easy to follow too – start HERE, get that bill uploaded and let someone else handle all the fuss of figuring out the best contract for you.
Or keep on paying out your backside each month, to each their own.
