Life is good down here in the Cape, and we’re not just talking about the mountain and the sea.
It’s no secret that Cape Town is the culinary capital of Africa – just look at THIS overseas foodie raving about how tasty things are down south.
Well today is another feather in the cap of the Cape, with two of our restaurants placing in the top 100 of the San Pellegrino Best Restaurants Awards for 2016.
No prizes for guessing that The Test Kitchen at The Old Biscuit Mill is flying the flag, coming in at number 22. Here’s BusinessTech:
The Test Kitchen ranked 28th in the 2015 list (and 48th in 2014), but climbed the rankings thanks to Chef Luke Dale-Roberts’ “rock star” flair in the kitchen.
“Combining culinary braggadocio and classical technique, his food would stand out in any of the world’s gastronomic capitals, but in the South African city it’s pretty much unique,” the group said.
Dale-Roberts is a British-born chef who trained in Switzerland and England before heading to Asia for a five year stint, launching several restaurants in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and the Philippines.
Nipping in at number 76 is La Colombe, nestled in the Constantia Hills:
Scot Kirton and the dynamic team at La Colombe are delighted to have been ranked no.76 in the 2016 edition of the Top 50 Restaurants of the World.
This recognition marks a phenomenal rise for the internationally acclaimed fine dining venue with Kirton also scooping the 2015 S. Pellegrino Chef of the Year at the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards last year award, in only the second year of operation at their new location at Silvermist Organic Wine Estate at Constantia Nek.
Competition for this positioning is fierce as the global judging academy comprises of almost 1000 international restaurant industry experts, offering a consolidated snapshot of their opinions and experiences.
Scot masterminds an extremely talented team delivering a French signature theme with a subtle Asian influence. The internationally acclaimed food and wine pairings seamlessly marry the best local ingredients with selected South African vintages, offering the discerning clientele a sensory snapshot of the finest the Western Cape has to offer.
Scot will also be opening a new venue in Constantia during the latter part of 2016.
You’ve done well chaps, but who rules the roost when it comes to top honours? That would be Italian restaurant Osteria Francescana, sitting at number one for the first time.
