Try as I might my surfing skills don’t seem to improve, but having had the chance to give it a bash I guess I’ve only got myself to blame.
Of course not everyone has that opportunity, which is why we’re so stoked to find out about what the the Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic event has up their sleeves.
The contest, taking place at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg from June 17-19, will not only showcase the skills of many of South Africa’s top longboarders, surfers and stand up paddlers, but will also support a Surfing South Africa outreach initiative.
It’s all going down at Surfers Corner from 9AM-1PM on Sunday, June 19th, and will involve about 60 young surfers from eight community-based outreach programmes that use surfing to change the lives of marginalised youth.
This one is all about having fun, and through using the unique Tag Team format (which sees groups of five boys and girls surfing together as a team) organisers ensure that every participant plays a role in the project.
The kids will also be fed and looked after by Tiger’s Milk, keeping energy levels at a maximum so everyone can tear it up in the water.
Of course there’s still the Tiger’s Milk Winter Classic main event going on, Sunday seeing the semi-finals and finals taking place. Up for grabs is a share of R55 000 worth of prize money, which might explain why there are already 140 entries for the event.
We’re guessing once you’re done watching the contest you’re going to head to Tiger’s Milk itself, and if you manage to grab a prime window seat you can watch the action with a beer in hand too.
A big up to everyone involved in making this event and this outreach program a reality too, surfing is best enjoyed by everyone you see.
