Monday morning trips to work are generally a bummer, but I’m willing to bet yours cannot compare to Bonginkosi Shange.
The 61-year-old was making his way to work when he was attacked and beaten with ‘sticks, golf clubs and bats’, then pelted with rocks for good measure.
The rail worker’s crime? To walk into a bunch of rioters, angry with the ANC ward councillor chosen for their area.
Here he talks to News24 about the incident:
He said he had no idea why he had been targeted.
“I was just trying to go to my work,” he [said].
He said he was forced to take a train from KwaMashu, because all of the taxi routes had been closed.
“I was just walking and they hit me everywhere,” he said, pointing to the gaping wounds on his head, lip, and neck.
If you’re enraged now, wait until you see the attack. Caution, it makes for horrid viewing:
It shouldn’t be so jolting, given that we see daily examples of how little regard our society has for human life, but incidents like these really bring that point home to roost.
Apparently Shange has yet to open a case, and until he does so the police will not take any action.
