Talk about entering the lion’s den, and by den I mean an outdated town whose very existence is at best perplexing, at worst downright racist.
You may have seen, if you skimmed the news these past few days, reports that Orania could fall under EFF municipal rule following the impending local elections.
This is worth a chuckle, but it was also worth a meeting between Orania Movement leader Carel Boshoff and the party. City Press reports:
Boshoff said the EFF had an intense, but constructive, discussion on the future of the country and the Afrikaans community…
“We had an intense discussion where we engaged in a number of subjects that affect us both. We recognised relations could still be cultivated. The EFF took notice that Orania has a unique dispensation and the EFF told us it does not want to change or end Orania.
“They also said we should not be excluded from politics and that our people should participate in the province and locally,” he said.
That all sounds civil, surely it wasn’t a case of everyone singing ‘Kumbaya’? Boshoff again:
“We do not agree to free services. We see that as a pitfall and we agreed to disagree on this point. This was a significant disagreement.
“The most important point which affords us common ground is our strategy of natural recognition. We recognise the EFF and expect them to respect Orania, and they agree, which is a solid way forward,” he said.
I can almost hear you angrily typing that if the people of Orania want to be left to their own devices then we should do just that.
Take a moment, hit delete and think about what you’re saying.
