Yes I know that headline sounds odd as hell, but it turns out that we’re not yanking your chain – this is actually the case.
An argument between a funeral parlour and KZN’s Ladysmith municipality has meant that a prostitute’s body has been kept in cold storage for two years.
This hasn’t proven cheap either, with TimesLive reporting:
The body of the unidentified woman, who was in her late 20s when she died, is now being injected with chemicals to preserve it.
Funeral parlour owner Siphiwe Mchunu wants R400,000 from the municipality for the cost of having to keep her body for two years.
“The chemicals cost me R7,000 every three months. I am prepared to bury this woman when the municipality pays me the R404,055.
“Had they given me permission in 2014 to go ahead with the pauper’s burial we would not be in this situation,” said Mchunu.
“The woman collapsed and died and we have been unable to trace any next of kin,” said Mchunu.
Good news though, Uthukela district municipal manager Sifiso Kunene has pledged to investigate the matter.
Knowing our municipalities that bill should hit a bar before we hear any kind of result.
