Flirting with a near disqualification, Novak Djokovic admitted himself that he is still lucky to be in the French Open.
During his match with Tomas Berdych, Djokovic got frustrated at having failed to convert a break point during the third set of his 6-3 7-5 6-3 quarter-final victory and carelessly threw the racquet to the ground.
Although his actions weren’t intentional, that racquet flew up and nearly hit the linesman behind him.
The World No.1 clearly looked apologetic and when asked about his actions, replied:
It’s obvious what I tried to do. I don’t understand your question.
I threw a racquet on the ground and it slipped and almost hit the line umpire. I was lucky there. That’s all.
After the action occurred, he was handed a code violation by umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore for racquet abuse.
He still won the match and the win takes him through to his sixth-straight semi-final appearance at Roland Garros – the only grand slam he’s yet to conquer.
