It’s a real pity that big Duane Vermeulen won’t be skippering the Boks in the upcoming tests against Ireland, but surely that paves the way for Lions stalwart Warren Whiteley to step up to the plate?
Insert incorrect buzzer sound, because apparently it will be either Pat Lambie or Adriaan Strauss who are given the honour.
Here’s Sport24:
…coach Allister Coetzee is set to choose between the Sharks flyhalf and Bulls hooker when he names his new captain.
The report indicates that a decision was seemingly made to not consider an overseas-based player as captain…
Vermeulen appeared to the favourite for the captaincy role after Coetzee last month indicated that he would consider an overseas-based player as captain.
Rugby bosses are however against the idea.
This means Francois Louw, who plays for Bath in England, is also out of the captaincy race and it paves the way for either Lambie or Strauss to fulfil the role.
I’m a big fan of both Pat and Adriaan, but Whiteley must be fuming right now.
Perhaps it is an indicator that he will not be Coetzee’s first choice eighth man, but quite how the soft-spoken Lambie has leapt ahead of him in the reckoning is something that will have Jozi rugby fans up in arms.
My guess is Strauss as skipper, Lambie as his vice-captain. Whatever you think best Allister, live by the sword and die by the sword.
