Good news for our friends across the pond – if you have dollars, then Cape Town and Johannesburg are amongst the top three cheapest cities in the world.
Tracking various prices for goods and services across the globe, the latest published report from Deutsche Bank focused on “sins” and dating.
For “sins”(drinking and smoking), Joburg and Cape Town ranked second and third respectively at the average cost of $14.00 (R218) and $14.10 (R220).
While Manila in the Philippines ranked in as the cheapest in the world with $11.60 (R180), the most expensive being Melbourne at $66.90 (R1041).
When it comes to dating (including taxi fare, a meal for two, soft drinks, two cinema tickets and two beers), Cape Town ranked 5th cheapest place at a total cost of $48.50 (R756). The most expensive is Zurich at $201 (R3128).
A weekend away including two nights at a 5-star hotel, meals, car rentals, alcohol, and some clothing items has Johannesburg ranked as the 5th cheapest city in the world, with a total cost of $867 (R13 494).
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the cheapest at $688 for the weekend, while Zurich was again ranked as the most expensive at $3,475.
While that’s wonderful news for those travelling with dollars to our cities, the weakening rand does little to allow locals to enjoy the same feeling of financial freedom.
