There’s a picture floating around the social platforms that was supposedly taken at a Spar. The exact location is yet to be identified – a bit weird, don’t you think?
The poster reads:
To avoid causing embarrassment to others, we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting the store.
Personally, I’m not one to wear matching pajamas – but it’s a classy touch, therefore it must be a classy Spar. They even chose red to go with their colour palette.
Public response was mixed. While some people agreed, others were like, “Bro, what gives?” Here are some of the comments from the post:
Now, spokespeople from the chain store are saying they do not know how the alleged poster made it on to the walls of one of their stores. Spar insists it has no policy like this, declaring they cannot dictate what people wear.
The group’s Marketing Executive, Mike Prentice, says the poster should not be assumed as fact.
In terms of group policy, you can wear whatever you want when shopping in a Spar store. We will never dictate what you can and cannot wear, within the bounds of decency obviously. And obviously each one of our stores would be entirely different. I mean, if you were a retailer on the Durban beach front it would be acceptable for someone to come in a swimming costume and slops.
Honestly, I wouldn’t put it past anyone of those managers of the upmarket Spars.
I mean, have you been to the Spar in Observatory compared to the one in Vredehoek. Different strokes, man, they need to keep their place in check.
