Yesterday Google made our lives just that much more complicated, and released yet another messaging service app called Spaces.
But reviewers aren’t sure what it’s really all about, as it has a few features that are interesting enough to take it beyond the messaging-only feature.
Let’s begin. While conversations are the central service to the app, it’s unlike the traditional messaging apps. The Next Web helps us explain:
Your conversations each live within the namesake ‘spaces,’ which cater to specific topics rather than particular people.
You can have a space for activities like your next vacation or planning a book club, or you can simply use it to collect images, links and videos of things that catch your attention. There are currently three post types: links (including YouTube videos and GIFs), photos, and text.
Discussions around content take priority over your independent thoughts. As such, Google envisions Spaces being used mainly by small groups of friends, family or coworkers who may need to coordinate a plan or simply want to discuss common interests. That said, I can also see it coming in handy for Pinterest-style link-and-image collection.

While it’s only in its initial stages there could be a lot more to it in the future. Some reviewers are dropping in Pinterest similarities, but with collaboration abilities.
Perhaps it will be ideal for a niche market, although I guess only time will tell.
