While there are hoards of people that fight for their life on a daily basis, choosing to end it is a difficult circumstance to understand.
But, after years of sexual abuse between the age of 5 and 15, a woman in her twenties has been granted euthanasia by Dutch doctors.
She was given a lethal injection after “doctors and psychiatrists decided that her post-traumatic stress disorder and other conditions were incurable”. Even after two years of intensive therapy that saw minor improvements, it was decided that she might never be cured.
But over in the UK, where anti-euthanasia campaigners are in an endless battle to keep it illegal, the news of her death as been received with anger. One Labour MP went as far to say that this means sex abuse victims are now being punished with death.
But these strict outlooks on a person’s decision to die in the UK has only resulted in a steady flow of people travelling to clinics in Switzerland to pass away.
The woman decided to die last year after dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder that was resistant to treatment, including severe anorexia, chronic depression and suicidal mood swings, tendencies to self-harm, hallucinations, obsessions and compulsions. Would you want to live with that?
She also had physical difficulties and was almost entirely bedridden.
