You would think after the whole Penny Sparrow and Co. saga occurred at the beginning of this year, the Facebook race-slander posts would slow down.
But not to worry, it appears that the racial division within the country has only deepened its trenches. While some are taking a step back to analyse the situation we’re in, others are going in full force.
There’s Matthew Theunissen dropping the K-bomb like it’s some time in the mid 20th century, and then there’s Ntokozo Qwabe.
After a cheeky joke occurred at his table while dining at Obz Cafe with friends, they decided to act on it and evoked a few “typical white tears” from the waitress by writing on the bill:
WE WILL GIVE TIP WHEN YOU RETURN THE LAND
What does that even mean? For a long time I have thought it a mere metaphor, because we can’t really give back physical land. I mean, who gets what and how much of where? I thought it just had to do with economic transformation.
[Surely the land Capetonians inhabit at the moment deservedly belongs to the descendants of the Khoikhoi, no? And then of course, moving up through history, we have the Cape Malays and coloured people who were removed during apartheid. I’m not sure someone like Qwabe fits in.]
Then, there’s the aspect of treating a waitron – no matter the colour – with such disrespect. As anyone who has worked in the industry knows – and we can safely assume that dear Mr Rhodes Scholar has not – it’s a shitty job. Like, really shitty.
A leading figure in the RMF movement at Oxford University (there on a Rhodes scholarship, nogal), Qwabe had many supporters. In fact, if Qwabe hadn’t publicly bragged about his actions, the country would not have mustered up more then R44 000 for 24-year-old Ashleigh Schultz.
I mean, this whole thing is a little ridiculous. Maybe there should be a crowdfunding for all people in the service industry who get treated like shit – by whites, by coloureds and by Germans. Hey? How about that?
Here’s Qwabe’s reaction:
